Film in the Wayuu Language: Juural Tü Eejirawaakat

The first feature film in Wayuunaiki, Juural Tü Eejirawaakat, The Roots of Resistance, was released in 2012. Created by the Maikiralaasalii collective that includes different groups of Wayuu communities in the Sierra de Perijá, in Venezuela’s Zulia state, this film uses indigenous language and ritual to protest mining and defend the autonomous governance of their land, a biologically diverse and fragile ecosystem. One of the film’s producers, Jorge Montiel, later screened a short film entitled Tatuushi (Elder) at the ImagineNative Festival in Toronto in October 2012, another example of the way in which film is used to communicate a worldview and resist incursions onto ancestral lands by communicating with other groups abroad. Previously, a short Wayuu film, Majayüt (Young Woman) was awarded Special Mention in the Marseille (France) South American Film Festival in 2010. The director, Elizabeth Pirela, emphasized the participation of the community in making the film, which depicts customs leading to marriage among Wayuu communities in Colombia and Venezuela. Evident throughout the newspaper Wayuunaiki and these films is the strong presence of women in leadership positions, a characteristic of Wayuu cultures, historically.
